Pipe Fittings are an integral part of industrial systems, helping the critical function of connecting, redirecting & regulating the flow of fluids within pipelines.

In this blog, we will see the details of Types of Flanges, Classification of its End Connections, Pressure, Temperature Rating and Types of Flange Facing.

A Flange in piping is a disc like component with evenly spaced holes used to connect two section of pipe of other equipment together. It allows for easy assembly & disassembly of Piping Systems and provides a seal to prevent leaks.
In other words, Flanges are flat, circular or ring-shaped Fittings used to connect pipes to valves, pumps, and other equipment. The Flange is an important fitting part of any Piping System. They are primarily used where a connecting or dismantling joint is needed. They provide a safe, leak-proof connection. They are mostly used in high pressure and high temperature applications.
Flanged connections are preferred over threaded connections because threading large bore pipe is not economical or reliable operation. Flanges come in various types, such as Slip on, weld neck, Socket Weld and more…. Each with its specific application and features.
They are commonly made of Materials like Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel, or other alloys, depending on the requirement of Piping System.
Flanges are essentially for various industrial applications, including oil and gas, chemical processing and water treatment.
Classification of Flanges based on Facing:
These are numerous types of facing for flanges. Some of them are:
- Flat Face
- Raised Face
- Ring Type Joint

There are two types of finishes available for the Flanges.
- Smooth Finish: Produced by grinding or lapping
- Serrated Finish: Are Spiral or concentric grooves finish
Classification of Flanges base on End Connections:
1. Slip-on Flange
They are designed to slip over the pipe and then be welded in place. These flanges have a low initial cost & are easy to align. They are commonly used for low pressure applications where welding is acceptable.
They are used where quick assembly, saving in cost & where extreme load conditions are not present. Since Flanges get welded to pipes with fillet weld.
However, they may not be suitable for high pressure or high temperature systems, as they can be less strong than other flange types like weld neck or socket weld flanges, Slip on flanges are available in different materials and sizes to match the specific requirements of a Piping System.
These are attached by welding inside as well as outside. Generally, these Flanges are of forged material. For bigger sizes these flanges are fabricated from plates.
2. Socket Weld Flange
These are welded only on outside and are used for small pipe size. Socket weld flanges are easier to install compare to other types of flanges like threaded flanges. These flanges are suitable for high pressure and high temp. applications because the weld & design provide a secure connection.
3. Screwed Flange
These are used on threaded pipeline; Flange is to be attached to piping where welding is not easily possible. Also, used where wearing & frequent replacement of Flange may be expected.
They provide a way to join components by screwing them together, creating a secure and leak tight connection.
4. Lap Joint Flange
These are used with stub end when exotic materials are used. The stub end will be butt welded to the piping & flanges are kept loose over the pipe.
5. Welding Neck Flange
These type of Flange used where there is excessive direct bending stress on the Flanged joint due to expansion of a section or supporting a heavy valve or other heavy equipment.
These are attached by butt welding to the pipe and generally used for critical service where joints need radiography, Flanges specified by the schedule number same as that the pipe being welded to the Flange.
6. Blind Flange
A Blind Flange is a solid disk used to block off the end of pipeline/ header or spare nozzle on equipment. This help in isolation, maintenance or inspection of the system.
7. Orifice Flange
These are used in applications where accurate flow measurement & control are required. It has a concentric hole in the center that is specifically designed to accommodate an orifice plate. They are typically paired with orifice plates & other instrumentation to monitor & regulate fluid flow.
Classification based on Pressure & Temp. Rating:
Flange pressure and temperature ratings are critical for safe Piping Systems. These classifications help engineers select suitable flanges to handle specific operational conditions.
The ratings typically follow industry standards such as ANSI/ASME, with designations like 150, 300, 600, and 900 for pressure in pounds per square inch (PSI) and temperature classes like 150, 300, 600, and 900. Higher numbers indicate greater pressure and temperature tolerance. Matching the correct flange rating to the system's requirements prevents leaks, material failures, and accidents.
Precise selection is vital to maintain the integrity of pipelines and ensure operational safety, making these classifications essential in engineering and construction.

Flanges: The Critical Joints of Piping Systems
Flanges are the common way to connect pipes, valves and equipment, allowing for easy disassembly and maintenance. Unlike welded joints, a flanged connection is a mechanical joint that relies on bolts and gaskets to remain leak-proof.
1. Common Types of Flanges
Choosing the right type of flange, depends on the pressure, temperature and fluid service:
- Weld Neck (WN): This is for high-pressure and high-temperature services. The long tapered hub provides excellent reinforcement.
- Slip-On (SO): Easier to align and cheaper than WN, but not recommended for severe cyclic conditions.
- Blind Flange: Used to seal the end of a piping system or use for a vessel nozzle.
- Socket Weld (SW): Ideal for small-bore, high-pressure piping.
2. Flange Facings: RF, FF, and RTJ
The "facing" means, the surface where the gasket sits.
- Raised Face (RF): This is the industry standard for most process plants. It features a small, elevated "step" on the flange surface that concentrates the bolt load onto a smaller gasket area, ensuring a tight seal at moderate pressures.
- Flat Face (FF): Used primarily with cast-iron equipment to prevent the flange from cracking when bolted.
- Ring Type Joint (RTJ): Reserved for high-pressure and high-temperature environments (often 600# and above), the RTJ face has a deep, machined groove. A solid metal ring gasket is crushed into this groove to create a superior, high-integrity metal-to-metal seal.
3. Pressure-Temperature Ratings (ASME B16.5)
In piping design, a flange's strength is defined by its Pressure Class for example, 150#, 300#, 600#. However, these ratings are not static.
According to ASME B16.5, as the operating temperature of the process fluid rises, the material's strength weakens, meaning the maximum allowable pressure the flange can handle decreases. Engineers must always cross-reference these ratings to ensure the selected flange class can safely withstand the specific heat and pressure of the system.
